December 1, 2003
Presidents Message December 2003 ‘Tis the Season To Be Generous! It is with great pleasure that I write my last article for 2003. Not because I am tired of writing these little tidbits but because of the satisfaction that comes from looking back at our successes and triumphs during the past year. We have had so many people come forward and give to the Chamber this year and have grown to an all time record membership level. As all business people know the celebration is always short because we have new memberships or customers to attract and serve as well as members or customers that have fallen by the way side or quit doing business with us. I want to again kick-start the Chamber for the New Year. We need another 30% growth year and this will take some hard work and sacrifice but we can and will get there. Our General membership meeting is scheduled for January 7th and will be the kick off for the year. So mark your calendars and plan on being there. We will install the new Board of Trustees and have the Chamber Committee VPs there to tell us about the programs for 2004 and offer you all a chance to get involved in the planning and implementation of these programs for 2004. The Draper Area Chamber has some needs that would be great to find under our Christmas tree this year! We need a good used low volume copy machine that copies 15 to 20 pages per minute and a newer computer to replace our old 286. We also may need some remodeling or office sprucing donated, depending on where we manage to secure office space in the New Year. And you can always donate cash for any specific cause you feel would benefit the Chamber! The Draper Area Chamber is a 501A Non profit and donations are tax deductible as a business expense. In closing, I want to thank all our members who come out and participate and all the members who renew their membership year after year as you are a true gift to the Chamber and our business community. As your President and CEO, I want you to know I am here to help you solve problems that come up or offer Ideas or simply give feed back. My many years of business experience are available to our members. I would like to publicly express my appreciation to our Board of Trustees and their dedication to our Chamber. Our out-going Chair (Dr. Mark Vosti) deserves lots of thanks and credit for his hard work and diplomacy this past year. Mark has been a great support for me this year and always managed to have the often-needed encouraging word at the right time to keep me from becoming discouraged. Thank you Mark, you are wise beyond your years. I would also like to thank and welcome our incoming Chair Laura Nordfelt. Laura is a real cheerleader and quality leader for our Board and Chamber. She is very creative and quietly produces great work. Her leadership will allow the Draper Area Chamber of Commerce continue its race to greatness! If you are not currently a member or have let your membership lapse make a resolution to be a part of this winning team in 2004. Go DC Team! Sincerely, William E. Rappleye President and CEO Draper Area Chamber of Commerce
The Chairman’s Corner The Draper Area Chamber of Commerce continues to make big strides towards becoming the best Chamber on the Planet. Other chambers are noticing the new programs and events that the Draper Area Chamber of Commerce implements and makes successful. Healthy Draper and the Associate Membership Program are two programs that are drawing the attention of the city, media, and other chambers. The success of the Chamber begins with great leadership and ends with its membership. Bill Rappleye has done an outstanding job being a CEO, President, Innovator, Motivator, Politician, and Friend for the Chamber and its membership. He is an integral part to the success of the company doing it with honesty, integrity and most of all compassion. He understands the difficulties and successes of the businesses in Draper and is a great sounding board for the concerns of the individual and business. Bill has been a champion for the Chamber of Commerce. Please congratulate him for a job well done. Can you tell that I like Bill Rappleye? Other keys to the success of the Chamber are Draper City, the Board of Trustees and the General Membership. I would like to thank Draper City for their financial and moral support of the Chamber. Mayor Smith and City Council members have often attended the many successful Chamber functions and supported them by donating time and money. Mr. Paul Edwards of the City Council graciously spends hundreds of dollars at the Sweetheart Ball/Chocolate Affair on a consistent basis. Others at the city such as Melanie Dansie and Alex Hallien have used their resources to help Bill to be successful by donating their time space and resources. The Chamber has found the moral support of Eric Keck, the Draper City Manager is essential to its success. He attended the Walk in the Park with the Mayor, a Healthy Draper event, and finished the mile run first. These are just a few examples of the city stepping up for a good cause in making Draper a great place to do business. The Board of Trustees fulfilled its role well. Let me start be thanking the members for their countless hours donated to the Draper Area Chamber of Commerce. As volunteers to the cause of successful business in Draper, they should be applauded for following their conviction to dedicate themselves and their resources to the Chamber. Terri Smith (one of my favorite board members) has dedicated a decade of service to the Chamber, serving at one time as its President and this year as the Secretary. She is a voice that should always be heard and her many contributions are greatly appreciated. Finally, the General Membership of the Chamber continues to grow and become actively involved its events. After all, the Chamber events focus on helping businesses be successful by providing networking opportunities and name recognition. The membership will continue to grow in 2004 as the Associate Membership program evolves. There are too many members that donated their time and resources to the Chamber to mention them all but many of them received one of the dozens of Stepping Up Awards that were presented at the monthly General Membership Meetings. The membership turned out at almost 70% to vote in the election of the Board of Trustees. We had six board seats to fill and had twelve candidates that received nominations with many others that were qualified to run for a board position. The membership is taking our president’s motto "Come on.... get connected" to heart through exceptional participation. The Draper Area Chamber of Commerce truly ends with its membership and the Board of Trustees will continue to serve them to the best of their ability. Please continue to support the Board of Trustees and your new Chairperson, Laura Nordfelt from Hands On Promotions, as we endeavor to make this Chamber the best on the Planet. Dr. Mark Vosti, South Mountain Chiropractic 2003 Chair Person Draper Area Chamber of Commerce
Look Who’s "Stepping Up" The President’s Stepping Up award was presented to the following members in October to recognize their continued outstanding dedication and service to the Draper Area Chamber of Commerce: Kelly Kersey, Swire Coca Cola Swire is a great Friend and Supporter of The Draper Area Chamber of Commerce. For the Fall Festival Swire donated a drink trailer and all the drink mixes for the Draper Youth Council fundraiser. This donation was worth several hundred dollars and enabled the youth council to collect over one hundred dollars for drinks as donations. Terry Blackburn, Terry’s Therapeutic Touch Terry is such a great help to the Chamber. Terry donated many hours helping put our golf tournament together this year. She also spent several hours to put together our November General Membership meeting (Holiday health Summit). Terry is very busy with her practice and the donation of time and energy came as a huge sacrifice. Rick Nayler, South Valley Printing Rick has been a help and supporter of the Chamber for many years and has recently donated printing of several thousand flyers for the Fall Festival as well as has agreed to print the invitations for the Awards Night Christmas Gala for free for the Chamber. Nancy Lynn Cox, Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market Nancy Lynn, although new to the Chamber has already taken the opportunity to donate a generous food discount to the Chamber for our summer Chamber Board gathering. Thank you all for your support of the Draper Area Chamber of Commerce, our programs and community efforts.

Leveraging Our Team by Melody Foster of The Cozy Home Historically, it has been proven that mankind’s greatest accomplishments are achieved through teamwork. Mount Everest, men on the moon, even the settlement of Utah – each great achievement accomplished through teamwork. The Draper Chamber is a team that has accomplished great things this past year, and our goals are even greater for this upcoming year. One of these goals is to facilitate opportunities for co-marketing programs. The best example of successful co-marketing is right here on our doorstep: the Healthy Draper Program. Many local businesses have participated in this program and the results have been tremendous for everyone. The Healthy Draper program brought businesses together in a way that gave every participant excellent marketing exposure, name recognition, community goodwill, and direct selling opportunities. I invite all businesses to come to the table and brainstorm, develop and participate in co-marketing programs. When we come together with our brains, energy and marketing dollars, we can accomplish so much more together, than we can alone. So let’s get together and DO IT! Call me or email with your ideas, suggestions and your desire to participate. You can reach me at The Cozy Home 571-0069 or mfoster@speakeasy.net.
Co-Marketing Ideas In Motion Idea 1: Welcome to Draper Gift Bags According to the Planning Commission, we currently have 7 new families moving into Draper each week. These are 7 new families, moving from another city, not people moving within Draper. To take advantage of this marketing opportunity, The Cozy Home has partnered with Suncrest Development to provide Welcome to Draper gift bags for each new family moving into a Suncrest home. This is a marketing plan that is already in action, and welcoming new business participants. Each gift bag includes small gifts and marketing pieces from numerous local businesses. Each decorative bag includes a Welcome tag and ribbon tie-up. Suncrest distributes one bag per home at the time of move-in. Businesses with a consumer market benefit from this direct marketing piece. We also invite real estate and property management companies to participate by providing our Welcome Gift Bags to their clients. If your business would like to participate, please contact Melody Foster at The Cozy Home for details.
Idea 2: Marketing Campaign to Encourage Draper Residents to Spend their Dollars in Draper This idea is fledgling and looking for the right contributors and participants to help it mature. However, the concept is to develop a complete marketing campaign that will encourage Draper Residents to spend their money in Draper businesses – at both consumer and commercial levels. Perhaps, one idea would be to pool advertising dollars from many businesses to reserve a full-page ad in the Draper Paper for several months. Then develop a marketing campaign for that space. We would also add additional components to the campaign: events, posters, contests, etc. This needs serious fleshing out, but let’s get it together! Call Melody Foster at The Cozy Home at 571-0069 to submit ideas, express participation, or support.
Legal Tip of the Month By Russ Blood of the Russell Blood Law Firm Anyone who has listened to the news during this past month is aware of a tragic situation in Florida involving a woman who has been on life support for many years as a result of injuries she suffered in a serious automobile accident. Her husband and family have recently been involved in widely publicized arguments over whether her life support can be terminated and she can be allowed to die. The Florida legislature even got involved and passed a special statute allowing the governor to intervene in the situation. This current argument between family members and the governor has resulted from the fact that the woman left no written statement of how she wanted this situation to be handled. You can avoid leaving your family in the dark about your wishes concerning your health care by signing a "Directive to Physicians and Providers of Medical Services," sometimes referred to as a "living will." The form of Utah's living will is specified in the Utah Statutes, which anyone can read at http://www.le.state.ut.us/~code/TITLE75/htm/75_02084.htm< http://www.le.state.ut.us/~code/TITLE75/htm/75_02084.htm> . Here you will find the requirements for signing a living will and the form to be used. You don't need an attorney to prepare it for you, although most attorneys will prepare it for you at no additional charge as part of any estate plan you hire an attorney to prepare. If you can print it up and sign it before the witnesses required by the statute, you will have created your own living will. Anyone old enough to sign one should have one. Be considerate of your family by taking the time to write down your wishes about the medical care that should be provided to you if you are ever in a similar situation.Next month: Health Care Powers of Attorney
Government Affairs By Russ Blood Chamber Members: One of the great opportunities you have to use your Chamber membership to make a difference is by participating on the Chamber's government affairs committee. Any member of the Draper Chamber may participate by simply signing up! Together, we can be a voice for the business community that will make a difference with our city government. We don't try to speak for the business community as a whole, but we do try to encourage our members to get involved with in the governmental process and be heard. Based upon our experiences this past year, we know that our city leaders value and hear the input of our members. I have heard several comments from members of the City Council and our Mayor expressing their appreciation for our support and input. This is another opportunity for you to C'MON AND GET CONNECTED with your city government. Anyone interested in participating on the committee can let me know by emailing me at rmblaw@mstar.net. November Business After Hours Sponsored by Key Bank of Draper By Julie Theriault I would like to extend a warm thank you to all of you who attended the Business After Hours Event hosted by Key Bank. For those of you who were unable to attend, I'd like to give you a recap of the evening. Catering was provided by Cuisine Unlimited. They did an exquisite job of transforming the bank into a beautiful social setting. Four cocktail tables, draped in black table linens, adorned with votives and rose petals on top of glass mirror, were scattered throughout the lobby. Along the west wall, two long buffet tables were beautifully engulfed in delicious foods and elegant centerpieces. Several vases of gorgeous white, peach and multi colored tangerine roses were placed at various locations. The bar was set up on the opposite side of the room serving bottled water, soda, wines and beers. Introductions of the Draper Key Bank staff were made which included Julie Theriault, Relationship Manager/Sales, Nancy Terry, Operations Manager, Sandra Montano, Sales & Service Associate, Trisha Nielsen, Vault Teller and Shaun Goodarzi, Teller (who was unable to attend). Ray Pollmann, Utah District Retail Leader, George E Redd III, Southern Area Sales Leader, Rick Leetham, Northern Area Sales Leader were also in attendance. We were privileged to have three excellent guest speakers. Mayor Darrell Smith followed by Bill Rappleye, Draper Area Chamber President and Chief of Police, Arthur "Mac" Connole. All were very informative and warmly received. Our appreciation for their time and support goes out to each and every one of them. Throughout the evening, business cards and numbers, corresponding with numbered turkeys on the floor, were drawn for door prizes. The lucky winners were, Mary Rappleye, Archive Solutions; Lynn D'Avolio, Suncrest Development; Terry Blackburn, Terry's Therapeutic Touch and Marge Koch, Draper PD. We would like to acknowledge and thank Chrisanne & Garret Sueltz, owners of Studio 603, for donating one of the door prizes. The evening was a success! Attendance was somewhere between 40 to 50 people. Not as many as we'd hoped but more than expected for the first go 'round. If I were to change anything about the evening, it would be to have more time for socializing and more people to do it with. These events don't need to be in the same fashion that Key Bank chose. Next one could be flip-flops and Hawaiian shirts. Who cares? The main thing is to JUST DO IT. Draper City business owners need to unite to make this one of the best little cities in the state. And together with the help of our City Leaders, it can become a reality. Again, to all of you who were able to attend, we send our thanks for making this night a success. ================================================== F or an up-to-date construction activities schedule regarding the 12300 / 12600 South Design-Build project, please visit the following link: http://www.12300south.com/Construction/activities.htm.Sincerely,

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT UPDATE by Alex Hallien of Draper City The Holiday Preview has been released for this year’s season and things are looking up. Discretionary consumer spending as finally generated steam and retailers are confidence we will see a much improved holiday season. If the back-to-school period (which now seems less of a factor with the year-round school system) provides some indication of the season, we should expect a strong holiday season. This season is a better predictor during a stable economy and much less reliable when the economy is in transition. Also, this season was fueled by the child tax credit checks mailed in the summer. The steady improvement in retail activity since April has been encouraging with the strong sales volume and overall earnings. The inventory levels are in-line with the increase sales volumes. This will allow new inventory to be purchased providing a fresh look and maintaining current sales margins. But not all the pieces are in place for a great holiday season. The recent wild fires in the West will be a concern, energy prices are higher than last year, mortgage rates are on the raise, employment numbers could be better and consumer confidence is still low. The housing market is strong which should support home goods and home improvement spending this year. The analysts predict a 4.0% increase in sales this holiday season with a few expecting increases as high as 6.5%. Sales growths are expected in digital electronic products, video game software, clothing, jewelry, CDs and home furnishings. Big-ticket items will be DVD players, flat screen and plasma televisions and digital music players such as iPod. Our own Ironman After 4 years and losing 40 pounds Lonnie Hunter's dream of completing Ironman Hawaii became a reality. The event was held October 18, 2003 in and around Kailua-Kona on the big island of Hawaii. The cannon went off at 7:00 am local time and 1,649 participants started the day with a 2.4-mile swim. This was followed by a 112-mile bike ride and finished with a 26.2 mile run. 140.6 miles later, Lonnie ran down Ali'i Drive to cross the finish line 14 hours and 40 minutes after the start of that remarkable day. Lonnie is now proud to call himself an "Ironman"! Announcing The Construction Zone Value Pages A special advertising project is in development with The Draper Area Chamber of Commerce and The South Valley Journal to support or struggling business in the 12300 Construction corridors. A Letter to Chamber Members: Dear Chamber Member,
The Draper Chamber of Commerce, Draper City, and the Healthy Draper committee would like to thank all the sponsors for their time and effort on behalf of Healthy Draper 2003. The Healthy Draper 2003 events where a success because of professionals like yourselves; and because of the tremendous interest in 2003 we will continue with Healthy Draper in 2004.
The Healthy Draper 2003 was a fun filled year of a variety of fitness and nutritional workshops, seminars, and assessments. The events were able to educated and change many of the participant’s lifestyles. The volunteer efforts on the sponsor’s part have been crucial in assembling such a wonderful program for the community. We had over 400 Draper City residents who participate over the year with Healthy Draper, and many were repeats through out the year.
One of the most often heard responses from participants was how wonderful it is to have local health care and fitness professionals in the area giving free advice, hands on attention, and information. " I really appreciated all the effort that goes into theses events…all the local health care providers I have met have been wonderful, now I will call them when I need glasses, or other services because I have met them." Betty Sutcliffe Draper resident and participant of Healthy Draper.
As a sponsor you have the opportunity to be more than a name in a phone book. Those that make themselves available at theses events are not only giving back to the community that supports them, they are also building relationships that translate to new customers.
Healthy Draper 2004 is just around the corner. Next years events will begin in January and will be held every other month instead of monthly. The committee has a plan for next year, but in order to finalize the year’s event, we need to know where you feel yourself or your company would provide the greatest asset to Healthy Draper. Sponsorship for Healthy Draper includes the following:
The first Healthy Draper event will be a workshop-based event. The idea is to have 8-12 mini workshops i.e.: yoga, walking, strength, nutrition, stress management, etc, through out the morning, that participants may chose a couple to attend.
The Healthy Draper committee wants to invite you back as a returning sponsor or as a new sponsor. For question please contact Annemarie Christopulos #553-0123.
Thank you for making a difference,
Healthy Draper Committee

Don’t Be A Quitter By Laura Nordfelt, Hands On Promotions 2004 Draper Area Chamber of Commerce Chair Person According to sales statistics, most salespeople close a sale on the fifth call. Specifically: 2% close on the 1st call 3% close on the 2nd call 4% close on the 3rd call 10% close on the 4th call 81% close on the 5th call With this in mind, it’s possible that salespeople are giving up too soon. Statistics from Dartnell Corp. show that: 48% quit after the 1st call 24% quite after the 2nd call 12% quite after the 3rd call 6% quite after the 4th call 10% quit after the 5th call The moral of the story: Hang in there!!
Keep On Chambering! As I complete my 10th year of service on the Board of Trustees and "retire" from active Board duty, I would like to thank the Chamber of Commerce for the opportunity to serve the Draper community. Over the years, activity in the Chamber has allowed me to expand my networking opportunities and increase my business as well as meet many fabulous people and make lifetime friendships. When I became involved with the Draper Chamber, it was in its formative stage and we were hard pressed to round up 25 members. Time has been good to the Chamber and an amazing change has taken place over the past few years with an expansion of programs fueled by support from Draper City. A full time President has made a huge difference to the organization and Bill Rappleye deserves a hearty congratulation for his hard work and determination. For any of you that remember, I’d like to take a quick walk down Memory Lane. Does anyone remember the "gold coat" controversy? How about the year the Chamber put on the largest Halloween bash ever seen at City Hall where over 2,000 hot dogs were served? The event even had an incredibly spooky "spook alley" in the basement of City Hall courtesy of Amelia from Amelia’s Floral. Speaking of hot dogs, does anyone remember the first Chamber fundraiser? It was the Coca Cola weenie wagon set up in front of Albertsons! How about the Summer Hoe Down which evolved into the Summer BBQ? (Don’t get me started on that one.) Did you know the Chamber won 2nd place for their float in the 1997 Draper Days parade and 1st place for the Newsletter at the 2000 Utah State Chamber convention? Does anyone remember the Mayor’s Ball? Gov. Olene Walker (then Lt. Gov.) was a speaker one year at the Hidden Valley Country Club. How about the Easter Egg hunt that was over at 8:55 one year because someone mistakenly spoke into the bullhorn? Do you know I have edited this newsletter since 1996 and served as Secretary twice and Treasurer twice? The Chamber is a great organization so GET INVOLVED. As I move on with my life, my time spent with Chamber has been invaluable and will help me be successful with my future endeavors. Invest you time and resources in your community, it will be well worth it. Good luck to all of you. I will miss this great organization. Just keep on Chambering! Terri Smith 1997 President
